INFINITY AND BEYOND
Universe, the whole cosmic system of matter and energy of which Earth, and therefore the human race, is a part. Humanity has traveled a long road since societies imagined Earth, the Sun, and the Moon as the main objects of creation, with the rest of the universe being formed almost as an afterthought. Today it is known that Earth is only a small ball of rock in a space of unimaginable vastness and that the birth of the solar system was probably only one event among many that occurred against the backdrop of an already mature universe.
LIGHT YEARS AWAY...
When we switch on a lamp we instantly see the light. That's because the speed of light (300,000km/sec OR 186,000 miles/sec) is so great compared to the distance it has to travel to our eyes. But the distances in space are vast, so it takes time for the light to reach our eyes. Astronomers express distance in terms of "light-years"; one light-year is the distance a beam of light would travel in one year. This means that when we see the light from a distant object like a star we are in fact looking at light that left it a very long time ago. What we see is not the object as it is now. Incredibly, we are instead looking back in time.

STARS
Stars are huge spinning balls of hot, luminous gas. Each one is unique because stars differ in colour, temperature, size, brightness, and mass. Over time, characteristics change and the star evolves from one stage of star life to another. The key to a star's life is its mass - the amount of gas it is made from. Mass determines the star's life span, as well as its other characteristics.
